I haven't updated about Reggie in a while. He's been doing pretty well, but is not back to normal. His red blood cell (RBC) count got up to (and stayed at) 41% for a few weeks, so the vets lowered his Prednisone from 20 mg a day to 10 mg. He's also finished his four weeks on antibiotics. He was clearly feeling better, and is eating and drinking a lot more. His weight, which had dropped to 13+ pounds, climbed back up to 16.4 pounds right before Christmas. All good news.
He's still doing pretty well, but his RBC count has dropped to the 37-38% level. The vets decided we need to keep his Prednisone at the 10 mg for now to make sure the RBC count doesn't drop further. He's still eating and drinking, but the past few days he seems a bit mopey*, and I think he's losing weight again...but I don't know for sure. He's always had cycles of feeling great and not feeling so great, which I think is caused by his liver condition. Tomorrow is going to ugly-cold, dangerous cold, mean-cold, so we'll have a nice quiet day at home.
As you can see in the picture, Reggie's in desperate need of a haircut. The vets finally cleared him to go to the groomers...if the groomers could take him when there weren't a lot of other dogs around and if they can do him quickly. This is because he's at risk of catching respiratory or viral illnesses from other dogs and to keep his stress levels down. He was supposed to go in tomorrow, but I cancelled because of the weather. (Hmm, the flash makes the carpet look two-toned in that picture. It's really all the lighter color as shown between Reggie's front paws.)
*Here I'm saying he's mopey and we just played tag for a while...his request. Not mopey now!
