The last few evenings I've been laboring over my sad, pathetic looking yard. Last year I paid a service to mow my yard, but they came every week whether the yard needed mowing or not...something they had promised they wouldn't do. And this year, my lawn looks awful. So I decided to tend to it myself, but if you know a teenager that would like to mow as needed, let me know!
I bought a new mower...one that actually starts and can, therefore, be used to mow the yard...and I planted grass seed. Please, please let the seed take!!!! I put my old mower out at the curb and a scavenger took it less than an hour after I put it out...thank you, thank you, thank you!
I should have paid a service to aerate the yard before I planted the grass seed, but didn't think of it in time. Hopefully a lot of the seed I planted will take hold and then next year I'll have it aerated and then plant more seed. I'd like my yard to return to it's former glory. I should have taken before and after pictures, but at the moment that would be depressing.
When I bought the mower, I explained to the sales person that I wasn't sure if the mower would fit in my car. I explained that I have an old Honda Civic, which means it's small, but not as small as the current Civics. Without wasting a beat, the salesman said:
"Do you want to sell your Civic?"
Wow...buy a mower and sell a car in one trip to the Home Depot. That's service!
I smiled, but otherwise ignored his comment...I might have purchased my car in Dec. 1995 (a 1996 model), but it still runs wonderfully and I'm not ready to sell it. It is beginning to show its age, so I might have to start thinking about a new car, but I'd like to wait as long as possible. But I'll check out Home Depot when I'm ready to sell.
A neighbor of mine works at Scotts and told me to reseed toward the end of winter -- when it is expected for the ground to freeze and thaw a few more times. This freezing/thawing action will break the dirt and work the seed into the ground and you'll get better germination.
Of course ... I forgot all about that this year and will be roughing up the soil to seed.
Good luck.

I have heard that fall is better than spring to plant, but I never knew why. Thanks for sharing. The past two years I've meant to plant in the fall, but both years something came up and I never did it...and each year the yard got worse.
I'm still hoping some of what I planted will take, I'll probably plant more in the fall, and more in the spring again...if necessary.
Reggie just gets so muddy each time it rains or snows, I need at least some of this new seed to take.
